Darrell Christopher Mivens
(Born in Fairfield, CA February 4, 1964 – )

Visual Artist, Wood Carving Artist, Musician, Singer-‐Songwriter, Culinary Artist

At the inquisitive age of 10, Darrell was rummaging through a nearby landfill near his home in the small southern town of Summerton, SC and found an old broken organ that he fixed and taught himself to play and thus the musical talent that was already in his DNA came alive. The first song he learned to play fully was “Sail On” by the Commodores. By the 9th grade he was playing the saxophone in the school band at Scott’s Branch High School and was taught by the world renowned Jazz Extraordinaire Mr. Thales Thomas “Skipp” Pearson. By his junior and senior year he was named president of the band and this earned him a full music scholarship to Fayetteville State University and he transferred to Claflin University.

After college Darrell went into the Armed Services as a cook and traveled the world with two years in Europe but still pursuing his music formed a band and was 1st runner-‐up in the Military Star Search.

The next several years were spent with jobs in the food industry as a chef and dietician. Upon moving to Savannah, GA his talents flourished. He’s performed on River Street with India-‐Arie who was then a student at SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design), Sister Rose & the Cornelius Bothers, Mahoganee, Michael Tisdale and many others. His musical talents include Base Clarinet, Saxophone, Keyboard, Drums, Talk Box & Congos. He has been featured twice on the Savannah News playing for his wood carvings and playing the congos.

His journey as a wood carving artist began when he was a maintenance man at an apartment complex and was so disgusted with how filthy it was he decided to quit for the first time. After walking away from that job he was praying for a solution and said the spirit told him “look down at that piece of wood, make something out of it and don’t ask me about money ever again”. He sold his first piece for $100 and since then has sold to people all over the world.
He is currently a chef at Emory University, a for-‐hire musician, a craftsmen and continuously creating pieces of art to share with the world.
